Sweden is a country of social programmes and politically backed
guarantees of a high quality standard of living. Care for the elderly rests
with the state and as a result there is a decreasing number of households
which hold several generations.
The system for taking care of the elderly is well established and very
functional. The municipalities are responsible for the care and tend to help
the elderly to stay in their own home as long as possible, but with
municipal assistance. The person has a choice of how he/she wants to live
and how to be taken care of. It is however the states' responsibility to
maintain a high standard of services and housing.
