Paying your bills  To pay your bills you can use different ways:

By check
Your checks can be written in English. However checks are not normally used to pay bills. Most companies don't have procedures to process checks so be careful. If you pay bills late you may have to pay a percentage of the bill as a fine.

By PrivatGiro
When you receive a bill tear off the bottom section with the amount owed and the company's bank or post giro account. PrivatGiro is a system that allows you to pay from your home and you will not be charged for each payment. You complete the giro forms, enclose the tear off slips from the bills, and send it to your bank via the mail. The funds are automatically transferred from your account to the company's account at no charge.

Using the post office
You go to your nearest post office with the bill you have to pay. Hand over the bottom part of the bill with the amount owed and the company's bank or post giro account and pay by cash or card. In the last case you have to show your ID card too. For each payment you make you are charged SEK 25. This system of payment may be useful when you are settling in while you are organizing your PrivatGiro or your Internet bank connection.

Via Internet
Your bank will give you a special code to access the banking system via internet and this will allow you also to pay the bills directly from home. At the moment the page is only in Swedish but with a little bit of practice you will be able to use this system efficiently even without a good knowledge of the language. Go to your bank home page - log in- write your PIN code - choose BETALNINGAR (payments) - choose NY (for new payment).

ATM-Automated Teller machine

To get money from your credit card try ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) that are all over the city. If you want to cash a check, be aware that it may present a problem if you don't have Swedish ID since passports aren't considered sufficient means of identification.

Vocabulary:
Account number - kotonummer
Company's name - mottagarnamn
Amount  - belopp
Date for payment - betaldatum
