Oslo - Health system
Health care in Norway is provided by the state, but there are several private clinics and hospitals. Usually you may have to wait a week or two for an appointment. Health care and medicines are free for children under 7 and preventive medicine for children (vaccinations, routine checks etc) is administered by the local health centre (helsestasjon) or through the school. For older children and adults a consultation fee is charged each time you visit the doctor (there is a ceiling on how much you pay. The doctor will give you a receipt card to keep track of your payments so you do not exceed this ceiling). You are required to register with one GP and are always seen by that doctor. To see a specialist, you generally need a referral/authorization from your GP.
