Mexico City - Driving licences
To have a Mexican driver’s license issued, you will need to visit one of many municipality offices of the Transit Department with your FM 3, (original and copy), passport and 450 Pesos. Usually they will issue it within 1/2 hour. Make yourself pretty, the picture will be taken there...

Documents needed for a Driver’s Licence
For adults, requesting a driver’s licence for the first time:
- An official identification document, like your passport, along with the document which authorizes you to reside in this country (FM2 or FM3)
- Proof of the address in which you reside in Mexico City. It could be one of the following: A bank or credit card statement -including that of a chain store- not older than 3 months or Utility statements Rental contract or agreements registered at the SHCP (Mexican equivalent of the U. S. Internal Revenue Service)
- Declaration under oath, that you are physically able to drive a vehicle (they will hand you a form which you will need to sign)
- You may (or may not) asked to pass a written test. International Driving signs and most international driving rules apply here, too.
- Be able to read and write (not necessarily in Spanish)
- Payment. Paguro suggests that you call the Mexico City hotline Locatel to find out the prevailing fee:
Tel: + 52 (56) 58 11 11. You should pay in cash.
- It will be best to additionally take with you any medical proof of your blood type so that this information be included on the face of your driver's licence. If you are not sure what your blood type is, we recommend that you go to any laboratory in Mexico City (there is one virtually in every neighborhood) and request one. It is quick, cheap, and you do not need a doctor's prescription.
