Acupuncture
Traditional acupuncture is based on the principle that our health depends on the balanced functioning of the body's vital energy (Qi or Chi). When we are in perfect health all the energy circulates through channels, called meridians, that have branches connected to bodily organs and functions. Illness is attributed to imbalance or interruption of chi. When an illness arises the flow of energy is blocked and this can manifest in a diverse array of symptoms. Using very fine needles, acupuncture aims to correct the flow of energy and by doing this the symptoms will be resolved.
Other procedures used separately or together with acupuncture include: moxibustion (burning of floss or herbs applied to the skin); placement of needles in the external ear (auriculotherapy); and acupressure (use of manual pressure).
Treatment is applied to 'acupuncture points', located according to the tradition throughout the body.
Check with your health insurance as some insurance policies now reimburse a limited sum of money for complementary medicine that has proven to be effective, such as osteopathy and acupuncture. Some insurance companies require a referral from your family doctor in order to qualify.
More and more professional doctors incorporate acupuncture in their studies and practices.
