Paris - Taxi
Taxis
Travelling by taxi is convenient (when you find one!), and also the most expensive form of transport in Paris.
Paris has 14 500 taxis and 460 taxi ranks. 'TAXI', or 'TAXI Parisien' lit up on the roof means free taxi. When the sign is switched off with the orange light on, the taxi is occupied. Be warned. It is difficult to find a taxi in the evening in the suburbs. Not so easy to hail one from the street either, as many drivers are reluctant to stop. Taxi stands with the blue and white taxi sign are located on most main streets, in the stations, around the large shopping areas and at the airports. Taxis picking you up at rail stations, airport terminals or race tracks are entitled to make an extra charge. Baggage charges on top and per bag are also made.
Most taxis will not take more than three passengers, so if you are four, you will have to take two taxis. At night taxis can charge extra. If you require a taxi specifically for four people, you can ask, when telephoning, to make your booking. They will organise a larger car to pick you up at an extra charge. Fares are based on mileage and are divided into three zones: inner-city, inner suburbs and outer suburbs. In inner city you pay about €2.00 to get in the taxi and about €0.77 per kilometre. This rises to €1.09 per km or €1.31 in zones B and C outside Paris. If you take a taxi to the suburbs from Paris, the driver may ask you to pay his return fare. As this can significantly increase the charge, ask beforehand. (See Rates)
You should tip the driver around 10-15 % on top of the fare.
The regulations governing Paris Taxis
The journey fares are displayed on the meters inside the taxis.
The fares are governed by the regulations in force. The fares depend on the zone, the distance covered in kilometres, the time, and the speed of the taxi.
Extra charges are applicable under very clearly defined circumstances.
Taxis are not liable for delays caused by bad traffic conditions and situations which may result from these.

When a taxi is called through a kiosk or a radio switchboard, the cost of the taxi's drive to the pick-up address (pick-up journey) is added to the cost of the client's journey.
The taxi cannot ask for compensation charges to pay for its return.
Should the passenger request it, the driver must supply a copy of the current taxi rates, specifying what rates should be applied and containing extracts from the regulations.
In the event of dispute, you should write to the following address, giving the cab's number :

Taxi use
When you call for a taxi the meter runs from the moment the offer has been made and the driver has accepted it. This is why a certain sum of money, for the pick-up journey (known as a "compteur d'approche"), is already apparent on the meter when the taxi arrives at the pick-up address.
You can ask a driver to follow a particular route e.g. La Défense to Roissy Charles de Gaulle "par les quais" will take you along the river via the Stade de France whereas the prescribed route is via the peripherique to the A1 motorway.
If you are travelling from the airport at Roissy in to the north or West of the city make sure they do not drive you via the A3 to the eastern side and then drive all the way round the peripherique. They are obliged to take you by the shortest, practical and most convenient route.
