Houston - Plants
Gardening is more than a hobby in Houston, it is a mission! Climate extremes are a challenge for most seasoned gardeners, add the fact that the area is bugs paradise, microbes heaven and diseaeses … you have got something to keep you entertained for… ever.
You are ahead of the game if you play by the rules and stick to plants that are native and have done the work of adapting to it all. Here we suggest some nurseries that do have selected items. Let us know if you know any other interesting nursery; we will be happy to increase the selection.
All usual chains have extensive selections of plants in many locations:
Home Depot, Houston Garden Centers, Lowes, Walmart, Target, Garden Ridge. Watch out for rootbound plants (plants that have been in the pot so long that the roots are all curled up so many times as not to have a chance to develope the plants normally once the plan isin the ground resulting in a stuntend growth).
Grocery stores and all chain stores have extensive seasonal decorations, both live and artificial.
Christmas trees are sold at grocery stores, stalls on the side of the road and in all the chains.
Artificial flowers and plants are sold in the chain stores mentioned at the top of the section, as well as at Hobby Lobby, Michaels (various locations in the Southwest) and Joanne Crafts (Highway 6).
There are many smaller flower stores in the strips and malls in every area.
