Houston - Banks
Different types of banking institutions:
Commercial banks - where you can open a checking account, savings account, loans, mortgages. NationsBank, Prosperity Bank, Wells Fargo, Bank of America are commercial banks.
Investment banks - where you can invest or buy stock options, obligations, like Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch.
Savings, loans and mortgage banks - are the ones you will use, if you intend to buy a house.
Credit union banking institution of large companies - are usually available to employees and families, where you can open a checking account, savings account and arrange loans. It is usually not possible to have an overdraft facility with these types of accounts.
It’s preferable to open an account in a large regional bank.
Automated Teller Machine (ATM) - (Automated Teller Machines) can be found at banks, chain grocery stores, convenience stores, shopping malls and elsewhere. Automatic Teller Machines use a PIN code (Personal Identification Number). There is a fixed daily maximum amount (on average is $300 per 24 hour period) and a monthly limit.
Some institutions will charge you a fixed fee (between 0.50 to 1.75 dollars for the operation). Any purchase will be directly billed to your account. The ATM also accepts VISA, Master Card and American Express. You can get information about your account balance of your checking account.
