Munich - University and College
The pre-requisite for studying at one of the universities or colleges in Munich is a German Abitur (high school certificate). It is very easy for nationals of the EU to gain entrance to a German tertiary institution.
An additional pre-requisite is the proven linguistic knowledge of German. This is the DSH: Zulassungsprüfung für Deutsche Universitäten (admission certificate to German universities). The majority of the language schools in Munich will offer preparation courses for this exam.
There are two types of tertiary institutions in Munich:
- universities - Universitäten - which offer a much wider range of subjects and courses, offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
- specialist academies - Fach/Hoch-schule - which specialise in a particular field (e.g. performing arts, economics) and mainly offer undergraduate degrees.
The academic year is divided into two semesters: one over Summer and one over Winter. The Summer semester goes from early April until mid-July. The Winter semester goes from late September until mid-February. Exams are run at the end of each semester. Enrolment in a course does not guarantee you an automatic seat for examinations at the end of the semester. You need to register for exams separately to enrolling in the course.
