Munich - Museums

Munich has over 80 museums and art galleries, so it would be impossible to list them all here. A good resource for current exhibitions is the Munich Found English language magazine (not a free publication), which is published monthly.

Most museums are closed on Mondays, and although many have free entry on Sundays, admission to visiting exhibitions will cost you extra.

Once or twice a year Munich is host to "Die Lange Nacht der Museen" (the long night of the museums) where the purchase of a single ticket gains you entry to as many museums and galleries as you can squeeze in between 7pm and 2am, including free shuttle buses in between the exhibitions.

The following is a selection of the more popular museums.

  • Alte Pinakothek

  • BMW Museum

  • Deutsches Museum
    Museum Insel 1

Daily 9am - 5pm This is Germany's premiere science and technology museum which takes up over 6 floors. There is also a Flight Museum in Oberschleissheim (Flugwerft Schleissheim), 13km north of Munich. If you have a family it would be well worth your while to become a member, as the member, an adult guest and two children gain free entry for the year. At least 3 visits are needed to make the most of the museum without rushing yourself or suffering from information overload. Demonstrations and films for particular exhibits are shown throughout the day, and now matter how early you get there, you will run out of time!
  • Museum Mensch und Natur
    Schloss Nymphenburg

Tue - Sun 9am - 5pm The Museum of Mankind and Nature is one of the top four museums in Munich (along with the BMW Museum, the Deutches Museum and the Neue Pinakothek). It is at Nymphenburg Palace, which is also worth the trip to stroll around the grounds.
