Taxis (drosjer) in Oslo are characterized by the colours of the taxi company and a lamp on the roof. The light is on if it is available and off when occupied or not in service. The Norgestaxi are the "yellow cabs" of Oslo, and their phone number is clearly printed on the cars (0800). You may pick up a taxi passing by in the street, queue for one at a taxi station (look for a blue and white sign saying taxi or drosje) or book one in advance to pick you up from a specified location (for an added charge). You may also ask for a larger taxi if a group of people are going together or a taxi for disabled (takes wheel chairs, etc). Or you can ask for a smoke free cab or an "allergy cab" (free from animal hear, called asthmabil). The rates vary according to region and time of day (night rates and weekend rates are more expensive). All taxis accept credit cards, and taxi drivers speak English.
