Oslo - Housing
In the Oslo area, most ex pats tend to live in the western part of Oslo as well as the neighbouring municipalities Asker and Bærum. As many ex pat families prefer to have their children in the International School, which is situated in Bekkestua, Bærum, they prefer to live not too far away from the school (the school provides a bus service throughout Asker, Bærum and Oslo). Information on housing (rent or buy) is available on the school's notice board. Several companies, especially international corporations with many ex pats, will have special agreements with an estate agent in the Oslo area. Contact the personnel department, the housing department or the Family Liaison Officer in your company for details.
Climate and heating
When looking for a place to live, make sure you check out information on
insulation, double glazed windows, heating methods and costs, as the winters
in Oslo can be long and cold and the heating costs may be high. Houses are
heated with electricity, often combined with oil, gas and log fires. Newer
houses have under floor heating (electricity), which gives a good heat in
the winter, but it can raise the electricity bill considerably.
