Hong Kong - Sports and Games

Hong Kong doesn’t place a lot of emphasis on sports because there isn’t a lot of space available to play.  Most sports are played through schools or through clubs. Joining a club in Hong Kong may involve a lengthy wait as you go through the waiting list, BUT if you are willing to play on a club’s team it may be possible to skip the wait and directly join the club.

The sports that are mainly played in Hong Kong are the ones that are popular in Britain (Rugby, Cricket, Tennis, Squash, etc. ) and, of course, various water sports. American football and baseball are very rare here.

For children, most sports activities will be available through school.  If you are looking for a particular sport that isn’t offered at the school, you can call C.A.B. to see if they have any places listed or try ESF’s hotline at 2711-1280.  They offer activities mainly for kids, but some adult sport activities as well.

The YWCA (Tel: + 852 2524 0639), website: www.esmdywca.com/ and the YMCA (+ 852 2369 2211) also offer numerous programs and significantly lower prices. 

There is a Leisure Activities department in Hong Kong (Tel: + 852 2853 2566) that offers public programs in sports, yoga, aerobic training, etc. You can call  for more information (although they don’t always speak English) or look up the website: www.lcsd.gov.hk/LEISURE/index.html   for a list of their activities.
