Hong Kong - Customs Regulations

Hong Kong puts excise duties on liquors, tobacco, hydrocarbon oil, and methyl alcohol. Do not put any alcohol or tobacco in your shipment and it will get through customs very quickly.

If you wish to bring alcohol or tobacco into Hong Kong when you arrive and you don’t have a Hong Kong Identity Card, you may carry through

  • One litre of alcoholic liquor
  • 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grammes of other manufactured tobacco.

Once you have a Hong Kong Identity Card you may only bring in

  • One litre of still wine; and
  • 100 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 125 grammes of other manufactured tobacco.

Although cars are not listed to have an excise tax, you will have to pay 40-60% of the value of your car when you register it. Therefore it is better to buy a car once you are in Hong Kong.

The above information was provided by the Customs and Excise Department.
