Hong Kong - Clothing

Clothing in non-Asian sizes can be hard to find.  Clothing stores are normally found in malls, but little clothing stores that offer western sizes can be found in the Dollarsaver magazine or HK magazine.

Tailors
There are lots of tailors in Hong Kong who are prepared to make exactly what you want.  It helps if you go in with a photo or a drawing and know what type of fabric you would like to use. 

If you get off the Star Ferry in Kowloon, you will have a flood of people hand you information about a tailor.  Also check out the HK magazine for more advertisements.

  I had pants hemmed here and they did a fantastic job making an invisible hem. Teneel speaks excellent English and was able to help me when I asked her about the proper length that pants should be.   If you know what you are doing then this is a convenient place to go.There is a lady who speaks English who will be able to help you, but you need to be willing to make sure the fit is exactly what you want.The first time I had a dress made here the sleeves weren’t right, but I didn’t speak up and tell them to fix it so I ended up with a dress I didn’t wear. However, my friend (who sews) had a lot of things made here and was happy with the workmanship. She knew how to check the details and make sure the fit was good before she left the shop.(Author's note)

Womens
If you are blessed with a small figure, then there are plenty of stores in malls where you will find clothes that fit you.  If not, then it will be harder to find clothes that fit with a price you can afford. 

Markets are also a great place to shop for bargains and clothes in western sizes, if you're not bothered about digging through mounds of clothing to find what could be a treasure.

Men
Men's clothing can be found in most shopping malls.  Alternatively, there are some excellent tailors around who will make very nice business suits at reasonable prices. 

Lingerie
I have found it very difficult to buy reasonably priced lingerie that fits me.  While I am not excessively endowed, I am bustier than most Asian women and my rib cage is larger.  I would advise bringing lingerie from your home country if possible.

Children's clothes can be purchased at a market, such as Stanley Market, or in shopping malls where you'll find a variety of children's clothes.Teenagers

LCX--contains multiple stores, such as Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, etc.  But selection is extremely limited so your teen may opt to buy from these companies on-line.

Ethnical and local clothing

The majority of the population wears western styled clothing.  Hong Kong tends to be a bit formal, so shorts and tennis shoes are not usually seen down town except on tourists visiting the city.

Ethnic clothing would include cheong -soms, the long form fitting dresses with the large slits up the sides to show off the legs.  These are sometimes worn to formal events, but not because they are expected or required, but rather simply because they are a formal dress that a person has chosen toshow off their figure!

A proper cheong-som should be made to order and be lined on the inside with silk.  There are many places around that sell pre-made cheong-soms, but I find with my western sized hips I don't normally fit into them!
