Munich - Pharmacies

Pharmacies 'Apotheke'
Pharmacies in and around Munich are instantly recognisable by a large, script 'A' on a white background. On the left-hand side of the 'A' there is a white serpent winding its way around a standard basin. There are almost as many pharmacies as churches in Munich (ie lots!).

One of the pharmacies within a particular area stays open for 24 hours (on a rotating basis). If you need emergency medical supplies, go to your local pharmacy first. If it is not open, you can find the location of the nearest open pharmacy on a board in the window.

If your need of drugs is so dire that you cannot make it to the chemist yourself, call the emergency number for 24 hour pharmacy emergency supplies: + 49 (0) 89 59 4475.

Unlike pharmacies in many parts of the world, the majority of stock is kept behind the counter, so you have to actually ask for it, rather than pick it up off the shelf yourself. This is a good thing to do anyway when you move to a new country and are unsure of the brands of medicine, particularly if you cannot read the dosage and safety information on the packet.

There are international pharmacies in Munich that stock brands of medicines that may be more familiar to you:

Neuhauserstr 11
Munich
Germany
Tel: + 49 (0) 89 260 3021

Bahnhofplatz 2
Munich
Germany
Tel: + 49 (0) 89 59 4119

Again, be very careful to follow the instructions on all medicines. Emergency numbers for poison control, ambulance and doctors who will come to your home are listed in 'Emergency'.
