Munich - Gardening associations

Gardening in Munich may be a little different to what you're used to. If you are lucky enough to live in a house or an apartment with a garden, then you can of course garden at home. If you live in an apartment without a garden then you have an alternative to indoor plants and whatever you can fit on your balcony: a garden plot called a Parzelle or Kleingarten.

Kleingarten are found in clusters at various locations in the suburbs and further out from the city. They cost around 12 000 euros to lease initially, and have ongoing fees of less than 500 euros a year. Different clubs have different rules for what is specifically allowed (and not allowed), but generally you must use at least 50% of the land for planting, and you are not allowed to hold BBQs and other parties in your Parzelle. The waiting list for one of these garden plots is lengthy, so much so that the time spent on the waiting list exceeds most expats' stays in Munich!

Each Kleingarten has its own membership association, and you do not have to lease a Parzelle to become a member of the garden association. There are additional gardening associations for people who don't lease a Parzelle which offer gardening advice, regular newsletters, horticultural classes and other member events.
