Founded in 1909 by the Sisters of the Assumption, Rygaards is a co-educational day school integrated within the Danish School System. The school, directed by a school board, is a private entity but is state-subsidized. The Danish Department serves the community permanently resident in Denmark, the International Department services those who are in Denmark only temporarily.

Copenhagen International School has served the international community of greater Copenhagen since 1963. As one of the twelve founding-member schools of the International Baccalaureate (IB) the school provides a complete IB programme for students from three years old to 19 (pre-kindergarten through grade 12).
