Houston - Water and sewer

The City of Houston provides water and sewer service to those areas inside or close to its corporate limits, whereas unincorporated areas are served by Municipal Utility Districts (MUD). Water and Sewer Rates are adjusted annually based on the increase in costs in the region.  A 1.8% adjustment (based on the Consumer Price Index) will take effect April 1, 2008

The City of Houston is responsible for investments to prevent flooding, to rehabilitate aging water and sewer lines and to safeguard the security of water supply.

More information on the City of Houston Public works website
The City of Houston charges the following fees for service:
Opening an account $ 5.00
Service restoration (after cut) $30.00
Returned check fee $24.00
Itemized statement: $10.00 / year
Printouts: $ 0.10 / page (printouts of information not readily available or in excess of 50 pages may incur additional charges).

A few areas inside the City have their own private water districts, like the City of Bellaire, and some apartment or townhome associations bill their residents to cover their costs. These are not City of Houston customers, nor are the residents of Pasadena, Friendswood, Cinco Ranch, Katy, Humble, or other major suburbs. For questions involving water service in areas of Harris County not served by the City of Houston, follow the link to the Harris County website. The list is organized by subdivision's name.
