Houston - Libraries

The library facilities in Houston are excellent and have plenty of convenient branches. These well stocked libraries are great fun for children and parents alike. They are fantastic places to catch up on the news, meet people and volunteer. Most libraries hold interesting events year round. There are Summer reading programs available for children on their break from school.

The majority of the libraries listed hold Parent and Child reading sessions involving story-time, mime, finger puppets and songs. Library staff members read and perform for toddlers, giving them an opportunity to interact with other children and the library facilities.

In most libraries computers, copiers and printers are available to library card holders. Some of the larger branches have video libraries, both for family viewing and educational purposes.

To obtain a library Power Card apply in person at any Houston Public Library location or print out the online registration form to complete and bring in. Library cards are free to anyone residing within the city limits of Houston. As proof of Houston residence, the Library accepts a Texas driver's license or Texas ID, utility or phone bill, or a personalized check. If these are not available, please ask a staff member about alternate ID. Children under 18 may get a library card in their own name with their parent or guardian's approving signature.

The non-resident fee is waived for persons who reside in the State of Texas. Others may purchase a card for $40 for one year or $20 for six months. Non-residents who own taxable real property within the city limits of Houston are eligible for a resident card with a property tax receipt verifying ownership.

You can call with questions to:

Each County has several libraries. Within the city limits the Houston Public Library is the network which oversees the public libraries. This may result in an overlap. For example, Houston lies within Harris County, but libraries within Houston fall under the Houston Public Libraries, not in the jurisdiction of Harris County Libraries.
