Houston - Dental care

The standard of dentistry is generally very high in Houston, but as with any profession, there are plenty of dentists with questionable values, so always ask around for a recommendation.

Large company employers generally offer dental insurance to their employees and this may take one of two forms:

The DMO (Dental Maintenance Option or Other Name) type requires that you use only those dentists listed by the insurance company. To be listed, dentists normally have to make a deal with the insurance company and agree to see patients for a lower fee than they would normally charge. This may suit those dentists, who are just beginning their practice and need to build up their patient base or those who cannot attract enough business by personal recommendations. The DMO insurance arrangement means that you have to go to a listed or member dentist only.

The PPO (Preferred Provider Option or Other Name) on the other hand allows you to choose to see any dentist. Within this scheme, there are also “in-network” lists of dentists that have deals with the insurance company. You will have to pay a higher contribution toward the cost of treatment, but basic examinations, radiographs and routine hygienist treatments are usually covered.

Within the dental field, there also are many specialists allowing you to exercise personal options:

* Periodontists treat gums and other oral soft tissues.
* Oral surgeons remove wisdom teeth, do biopsies and carry out minor and major oral surgery.
* Endodontists work exclusively on the roots of teeth.
* Restorative dentists restore teeth to normal function and acceptable aesthetics.
* Cosmetic dentists improve aesthetics.
* Orthodontists realign teeth for functional and cosmetic reasons.
* Pediatric dentists treat children exclusively.

Different nationalities and cultures vary in their expectations of appearance.
In general, Americans tend to prefer the most perfect, straight teeth available to them.

Dentists - therefore - set out to achieve this standard, so be sure to discuss whether a procedure is for purely cosmetic or for functional health reasons or for both. If you have any doubts about the necessity of a procedure, seek a second opinion from another dentist, preferably in another dental practice.
Much attention is paid to oral cleanliness in America, take heed and join the masses of Americans who keep their teeth in advancing years!
