Houston - Child care and baby-sitting
CHILDCARE
A child younger than school age can be placed in a Day Care facility, a private center that takes children from infancy to age five all day, and children from age six to twelve for after school care.
Many Day Cares have special programs, such as “mother’s day out”. This can give mothers some time off to run errands once or twice a week. Churches usually offer good child care programs, but often have waiting lists.
It is always best to get recommendations from other satisfied parents and to visit the facility before you register your child. Find a center in the area where you live or work and look for a facility that has a small class size and a well trained and experienced staff.
There are also informal mothers groups who offer support and information to young mothers.
Bellaire Young Mothers is such a group offering mothers with pre-school age kids in bellaire and surrounding zip codes a great online resource, www.bellaireyoungmothers.org. You can buy and sell through their website, ask questions and get recommendations/answers from other mums. They arrange playgroups, mom's night outs, book group and other special interest groups, it is a go-to place for local info.
There are similar groups in the heights and Montrose and probably other places, depends where you live whether you qualify for the residency rules. Definitely worth looking into if you are moving in the inner loop with little kids..

Hourly care
This is not a Day Care facility; it's a safe place to leave your child, if you need a few hours to run errands. To use this service, you are required to pay a yearly registration fee and an hourly rate afterwards.

BABY-SITTING

Babysitting is a terrific way for teenagers to earn some money, gain some responsibility and the Red Cross even offers a course to help your child to be qualified in baby-sitting practises.
It is a smart idea for your child to ask the family for a letter of recommendation; this can be used as a reference to demonstrate your child's ability to find work and earn pocket money in the future. The only difficulty that your child may face in finding regular work as a babysitter or formal work in other sectors, is the need for a social security number.
Babysitters can be found in Houston with ease in the majority of locations, however, if you live outside the city limits, it can become more difficult finding suitable qualified people. To find a babysitter, look in the local sub-division newsletter for a listing, ask at the local community place of worship or ask your neighbors about any qualified babysitters they may know.
You may find that in Houston, as entertainment is family-style, babysitters are not used as frequently as you may have found elsewhere.
It's not unsual to find girl or boy babysitters as young as fifteen years old. Finding older babysitters can be difficult, unless you are living in a more centralized area, as most seventeen and eighteen year olds are away at college, which means that fifteen or sixteen year olds are the available resource.
Most babysitters will be trained in first aid and other babysitting skills by the Red Cross and you may ask for references.
Depending on the sitters age, experience or qualifications, you can expect to pay anything from $7.00 to $13.00 an hour.
It is best to book a babysitter in advance, and it's quite difficult to find a sitter on school nights - August through May. A sitter will want to know before hand what time you intend to return home; this can put a damper on the nights outing!
