Houston - Alternative medicine

Information anout homeopathy, traditional chinese medicine including acupunture.

Homeopathy is a natural pharmaceutical science that uses various plants, minerals or animal substances in a very small dose to stimulate the sick person's natural defenses. The medicines are individually chosen for their ability to cause in overdose the similar symptoms the person is experiencing. The medicines, thus, go with - rather than against - the person's natural defenses. The "law of similars" is the basic principle of homeopathy and is used in some conventional medical therapies, such as immunizations and allergy treatments.

Homeopathy is not recognized by health insurance companies in the United States, but there are several stores and practitioners in the Houston area that offer products and advice.

Homeopathy became popular in this country and in Europe during the 1800's because of its success in treating the many infectious diseases that raged during that time, including yellow fever, scarlet fever, cholera and many others. It is popular with many people and again, not recognized; but do use recommendations or contact the American College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine for further information

What is Acupuncture and does my Medical Insurance cover it?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese treatment. The treatment includes the insertion of fine needles inserted at specific points into the body in a practice used by the Chinese for over two thousand years forming a painless method of treatment.
The World Health Organization has acknowledged that it is suitable for treating an extensive list of complaints not restricted to just the following:  Gynecological complaints; nervous system; muscular disorders; gastrointestinal disorders; respiratory disorders; ear, nose and throat disorders.

Insurance plans and General Practitioners in Texas do not as a rule recognize alternative the medicine practices mentioned in this section. However, some individuals have argued their cases and have - in some situations - been reimbursed their costs.

In Texas, all acupuncturists have to be licensed under the Acupuncturists Licensing Board and Data Source: Texas State Board of Acupuncturist Examiners (TSBAE). The TSBAE recommends rules to regulate persons practicing acupuncture. These recommended rules are adopted by TSBME.  TSBME staff provides licensing data for acupuncturists practicing in Texas.

The Texas Department of Health (TDH) defines acupuncture as

- the non-surgical, non-incisive insertion of an acupuncture needle and the application of moxibustion to specific areas of the human body as a primary mode of therapy to treat and mitigate a human condition.

- the administration of thermal or electrical treatments or the recommendation of dietary guidelines, energy flow exercise, or dietary or herbal supplements in conjunction with the treatment described by Paragraph (A).

Houston is home to the American College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) that seeks to emphasize the role of Oriental medicine in mainstream practices with a goal aimed at combining Western and Oriental medical treatments. The ACAOM has formed alliances with Memorial Hermann Healthcare System and Houston Baptist University to offer acupuncture services at the Wellness Center. This facility is located adjacent to the Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital.

The figures below represent the rise in popularity of Acupuncture and TCM throughout the last decade in Texas and demonstrate the number of practitioners who have set up practice in the Houston area in response to the increase in popularity.
1991 Acupuncturists by County of Residence (66)
1998 Acupuncturists by County of Residence (321)
2001 Acupuncturists by County of Residence (369)
